Bury the Aint’s Second Line

Here are some of the images from yesterday’s Bury the Aint’s Second Line, was a total blast and the crowd was huge! No surprise there….Lenny Kravitz joined in for a bit, and there were plenty of the usual suspects. These are the ones I was able to do today, will get to the rest this week, but you should get a good taste here….WHO DAT!!! “Short Story for WWOZ’s Website“…The Aint’s Bags (classic brown paper with eyeholes) of the past were officially laid to rest as only New Orleans could at last weekend’s”Bury the Aint’s” Second Line. With rousing chants of “Who Dat!” as well as paper bags and signs with “Aint’s No Mo’” everywhere, the second line was led by trombonist Glen David Andrews accompanied by singer/songwriter Paul Sanchez and the Baby Boyz Brass Band. The weather was beautiful and so was the crowd, which included Leroy “The Whistle Monsta” Mitchell, The Saints Pope and Cardinals, Dancingman504, Tambourine Green and plenty of other local celebrities. Rock star Lenny Kravitz even joined in for the carrying of the ceremonial “Aint’s No More” casket and the massive march from St. Philip and N. Robertson towards the Quarter. The second line cruised down N. Rampart, up Esplanade, and then on Chartres. It ended at d.b.a. on Frenchmen Street, where Glen David Andrews continued to wow the Who Dat Nation on the bandstand. Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and the “New Suit”….sew, sew, sew

Spent some of yesterday afternoon with good friend Big Chief Monk Boudreaux checkin on the status of this years suit, since Mardi Gras is right around the corner, the streets will be loaded with all of the new colors and suits form all of the Mardi Gras Indian tribes. Monk is the “Big Chief” of the Golden Eagle Mardi G…ras Indians, and has some of the most amazing suits every year. Right now he say’s, “I’m on the patch stage”….Monk’s sews multiple, around 26 if I remember correctly(check out the pics I attached), intricately detailed patches which then get sewed all over his suit, I mean all over, arms, legs, head dress, back, back of legs, boots, you get the idea, and that’s before we even get to the feathers and more. I am gonna check back with him in a couple week’s to see where how the progress is going and will post some pics then. I can hear the bands practicing in the streets, and the Indians are sewin, Mardi Gras is in the air, and I’m actually lookin forward to it more than usual, not the Bourbon Street Mardi Gras, the REAL one!!

First ever Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra!

For those of you who want a truly authentic experience of what Mardi Gras is really about, I highly recomend dragging yourself and whoever else you can bring to this show Mardi Gras Day to see the FIRST ever performance of the MARDI GRAS INDIAN ORCHESTRA…”It don’t get betta than this”…..
WHO- the concert features a who’s who of celebrated New Orleans musicians including players from rock, jazz, funk and the Mardi Gras Indian community

WHEN- Fat Tuesday, February 24, 2009- parade begins around 9:30 AM. Concert begins at 3 PM

WHERE- the parade begins at N. Broad and Desoto Streets and the concert is at the Hi Ho Lounge on St. Claude Avenue

February 13, 2009- New Orleans- Family Fish Productions announced today a full day of Mardi Gras Indian activities culminating in the first-ever performance of the Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra- a super group of New Orleans musicians supporting many of the leading lights of the Mardi Gras Indian community.

The festivities begin early on Mardi Gras morning, February 24, 2009, at N. Broad and Desoto streets for the calling out of David Montana, the second chief of the Yellow Pocahontas. Renowned hoodoo guitarist, Papa Mali, will perform with acclaimed African percussionist Seguenon Kone as the second chief emerges with his queen and Indian princess for the day’s celebration.

A procession will follow as the second chief parades from Mid City to the Seventh Ward neighborhood for the ritual meeting of the tribe. The first scheduled stop will be on N. Villere Street at the home of the late Chief of Chiefs, Allison “Tootie” Montana. Darryl Montana, the Big Chief of the Yellow Pocahontas, will emerge from his father’s house and join in the celebration with his cousin, the Second Chief, and the other members of the tribe.

After parading around the neighborhood, meeting other tribes in the ritual encounters that make up the bulk of the day for the city’s Mardi Gras Indians, the afternoon’s concert will begin at the Hi Ho Lounge on St. Claude Avenue at 3 PM.

The Mardi Gras Indian Orchestra features many of the most stalwart musicians in the city. The rhythm section will be anchored by Kevin O’Day on drums, Reggie Scanlan (the Radiators) on bass, Joe Ashler (Good Enough For Good Times and Otra!) on keyboards and Seguenon Kone, Geechie Johnson (the Wild Magnolias) and Rosie Rosato (of Henry Butler and the Steamin’ Syncopators) on percussion. The string section includes Helen Gillet on cello and effects, Harry Hardin on violin (and baritone saxophone) and Marc Paradis on cello. Guitarists committed to the project include Papa Mali, Camile Baudoin (the Radiators), Anders Osborne and Sam Hotchkiss (Juice). Horn players scheduled to appear include Evan Christopher on clarinet and “Jumpin’” Johnny Sansone on harmonica and effects.

Several notable Mardi Gras Indians are also scheduled to appear including the aforementioned Montanas of the Yellow Pocahontas, Big Chief Roddy of the Black Eagles, and acclaimed Mardi Gras Indian vocalist Eric “Yeti” Boudreaux. Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes, the Big Chief of the Northside Skull and Bones, is also scheduled to appear.

Shamarr Allen and Willie Nelson to appear on David Letterman!!

New Orleans’s own, Shamarr Allen, will be appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman on Monday February 16, 2009. As previously announced, he will be heading out on the Willie and the Wheel tour on the 11th, appearing with Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel. This is exciting news for both Shamarr and his fans, both locally and across the United States. Please assist us in spreading the word. Also, Shamarr told me that yesterday, Willie Nelson had the Austin City Limits recording, which was scheduled for Mardi Gras Day, moved up a day so that Shamarr will NOT miss his first Mardi Gras ever! That’s pretty damn cool…..Congrats again Shamarr!!
